I entirely ✰love✰ the Uglies-Pretties-Specials-Extras quadrilogy SO much! I have checked it out from the Los Angeles Public library repeatedly. For me the series, each and every book, is everso entirely happy-making (or #bubbly). There is a quality, or energy, in the writing that infuses me each time that I read or re-read these books. I definitely love the well-drawn characters and the futuristic, post-apocalyptic setting and the writing style and plot, entirely. The negative reviewers are entitled to their opinion yet I find their reviews #bogus. Truly, one man's art is another man's arse. I was so excited to buy the Scott Westerfeld: Uglies Quartet (The Uglies) for moi Kindle Paperwhite, 6" High Resolution Display with Built-in Light, Wi-Fi - Includes Special Offers. This is the kind of series that is ideal for those who love smart, fast-paced YA dystopian fiction. This particular writer's take on a futuristic dystopia, involves teens who are, for the most part, the only people with intelligence and desire and ability to change the world. The series innovation and writing style makes me think the author must psychically be Kurt Vonnegut The Sirens of Titan (Kurt Vonnegut Series) and Francesca Lia Block's Weetzie Bat (Weetzie Bat Books) energetic love child. I can't wait to read this series again and again. Happy reading, pretties~*

UGLIES is awesome, I love that I found it. I haven't heard of this before, and risked, and was very lucky. It's pure entertainment, but can also make you think. It's an original idea and all the world that the author builds is feasible, coherent and intelligent! The text is good and the way that the narrator was created is very clever too - the narrator also is in the future time, so he can only narrate from that point of view. It is great. I am finishing the third book now (Specials), and am just a little disappointed with it. It's not so great as the other two... I bought Bogus to Bubbly as well, and, spoiler alert - don't start reading it before you finish he series (although it's tempting)!
I was introduced to Scott Westerfeld in high school by a friend. I first read the "Uglies" series. I immediately fell in love with this author. I went on to read the entire Uglies series and then ended up reading darn near every book Westerfeld ever wrote. If you're in to futuristic, free thinking style writing Scott Westerfeld is an amazing author. I have recommended his books (The Uglies series in particular) to many, many people...and would do so over and over again.
I'm in my late 20s. I didn't plan on reading this book... but it was at the library when the book I'd wanted was not.
I picked up the audio book for my long drive to and from work each day (2 hours daily). The book I wanted was probably a snoozer anyhow..

I was pleasantly surprised.
Creating a fictional world is difficult... and Westerfeld does so wonderfully.
His style really reminded me of Lois Lowry's .. in particular, "The Giver".

Character development is spectacular. He introduces a new way of life and various technologies seamlessly.

I got lost in this book and can honestly say I think I loved it.

Over Christmas weekend, my husband was in the car with me a lot driving to see family. We actually drove in silence listening to the story (Extremely unlike us. I tend to talk excessively in the car for unknown reasons).

After one week--- I've got 3 discs left.

I will be picking up the next books in paper format and I can't wait to finish up this one next week!
Uglies (Boxed Set) Uglies, Pretties, Specials (The Uglies)

This is a timely group of books which pokes at and dispels our current societal stereotypes. Scott Westerfeld writes a compelling futuristic, action packed series which follows his heroine, Tally Youngblood, through the process of being an Ugly, a Pretty, a Special, and finally, a freedom fighter who protects what is natural and real.

The world has learned that to control kids, particularly teenagers, you give them what they want beauty, romance and shallow minds. Put them on an island with all the pleasures their hormones desire and they will stop disrupting the known way things should be.

Tally Youngblood, an active, inquisitive pre-teen, is tired of waiting for her chance to be transformed into a "Pretty" and go live in New Pretty Town. She outwits her dorm room, which is programed to track her every move, and goes to spy on New Pretty Town. There, to her dismay, she finds out what being "Pretty" really is about. She meets rebels who don't agree with turning every person into a mindless beauty and becomes an outlaw.

Tally and her friends travel on flying surfboards, live in abandoned cities, join native groups in the forest, are captured and imprisoned by both uncivilized tribes and the police (Specials), find countries where people remain natural and countries where being "pretty" has gone extreme, and overall learn that people, all people, are good and bad. Through it all she finds romance in both the "Pretty" world and the "Ugly" world, and determines that you can't judge anyone, including yourself.

But these books don't just support new stereotypes by saying all "Pretties" or "Specials" are bad, either. Tally becomes, over time, each of these, and always remains independent and true to herself. Fun adventures, strong writing, and a message that no matter who you are, you can still be a rebel and a leader.

Great reading for teens, young adults and yes, adults everywhere!
