In 1816 London Gabriel Lacey, English cavalry officer and veteran of campaigns in India, the mid-east, and the Peninsular war, has suffered unjust betrayal and revenge from a one-time friend and mentor Colonel Aloysius Brandon. He undertakes to solve a mystery of the death of a former colonel in the English calvary and falls in love with the widow. His investigations involve him with Interesting characters who reveal their personalities in their words and actions throughout a well-wrought plot where telling and sometimes surprising relationships and motivations are revealed. Immorality and amorality clash with justice and honor. After the fulminations over style and taste in domestic decorations (and careful descriptions of tasteless, poor quality in some cases), I found it hard to be believable coming from Captain Lacey, who had not lived a life where he would have had much opportunity to be taught those distinctions. For instance, this: “Lydia Westin’s house was like her, elegant and understated. In a world of ornate gilding and faux Egyptian furnishings, the Westin household had retained a more classical feel. Ivory paneling framed delicate moiré wallpaper hung with landscapes. Tapered-legged tables stood in niches along the black andwhite tile flooring, and fresh flowers filled vases hung on the walls flanking mirrors.” This from a man who thought of himself as described by acquaintances as blunt and direct in his manner, his tactlessness often getting him into tense difficulties.

A Regimental Murder Captain Lacey Regency Mysteries Book 2 edition by Ashley Gardner Jennifer Ashley Romance eBooks Reviews

I like one, second in the series. I like that Captain Lacey is honorable, yet flawed with a temper. When it comes to protecting the honor of women, or even avenging it's loss, he's fury itself. Which may one day be his undoing. But I can't help but like him, and enjoy even his wilder moments.

Coming upon a widow in distress, Lacey is pulled into a mystery of a death that happened in the military long ago. The widow is convinced her husband is actually innocent of the crime he was to be punished for, before his untimely death, and asks Lacey to restore his good name.

And no one wants Lacey to start digging into an ugly past.

This really pulled me in and kept me reading. I wanted the mystery solved, but also to see how Lacey would handle the various problems and snares that came across his way. Sometimes, he didn't handle them very well, and he's lucky he has some close friends that care about him. And I feel as if, in real life, I'd have been one of them if I'd known him.

I wouldn't always agree with his actions, and he'd probably piss me off more than once, but I'd be there for him all the same. That's the kind of character that keeps bringing me back.
Captain Lacey is a delightful character -- gallant, masculine, and passionate about pursuing justice, especially when his friends are involved. In this story, Lacey is drawn into a romance with the beautiful, recently widowed Lydia Westin. Lydia hires Lacey to clear her husband's (Colonel Westin) name after a significant scandal has tarnished his memory. It is not clear who murdered John Spencer in Badajoz, Spain, during the infamous rape-and-pillage scene that blackened the name of the British Army during the Napoleonic wars, but Westin was blamed, and Lydia is passionate about restoring his honor.

Lacey falls for her completely. Of course, he gets the job done, but throughout the book and especially at the end, the reader is not too sure about Mrs. Lydia Westin. In the course of his pursuit of the criminals and his pursuit of Lydia as a potential mate, Lacey discovers that his long-lost wife may still be alive. This tidbit of information is dangled for a few pages but is then stuffed away, no doubt for use in a future Captain Lacey mystery. I like the fact that the main character is male, but the descriptions have the detail and emotional sensitivity (sorry if that sounds sexist) that indicate a female author. I also like the fact that the plots in these novels are not excessively convoluted. This one pushed the envelope--lots of suspects and strange motives--but it was still possible to follow the sequence of events and feel satisfied with the ending.
More of Gabriel Lacey 's history comes to light in the second book in this series. The details do not make Captain Lacey any less tragic but they do explain more about his complicated relationship with Louisa and Aloysius Brandon. In fact, many secrets come to light when a widow asks Captain Lacey to clear her late husband's name of a murder that occurred during the peninsular war.
I really like how the main characters develop in this series. I also appreciate how the author does not sugarcoat or ignore the filth and brutality of life in the early nineteenth century. Those details bring the story to life and make it more authentic. I'm looking forward to reading more of Captain Lacey's adventures.
I am absolutely loving this series. The writing is top-notch, the characters are well-developed, and the mysteries keep me guessing. I believe I mentioned this in my review of the first book in the series, but Ashley Gardner has a real gift for transporting the reader to the eras and locations, where the stories are set, with just a few sentences. I especially enjoy the MC, Captain Gabriel Lacey. He's such a multi-faceted character. A good man, but not always a nice man, and that temper of his...! I would very much like to see this series made into a TV series on BBC, starring Matthew Macfayden as Captain Lacey (although I can see him in this role, because his character on Ripper Street is somewhat similar to Captain Lacey).

If you are a fan of historical mysteries or like to read about Regency era England, you should give this series a chance.
