This review is strictly for the new Helen Constantine translation of A Love Story.

What a sublime translation. When Zola dives into his impressionistic descriptions of Paris in the different seasons Constantine finds the words to make it meaningful for English readers without being oppressively descriptive.

I was moved by Zola's story of a woman finding love for the first time and the psychological damage it does to her young daughter. I had read other reviews of the book (not this translation) and I thought that having to read about the daughter's plight would be torture and a slog to get through. But I was surprised, after reading it, how much I sympathized with the daughter and actually liked her.

I also found the protagonist, Helene to be sympathetic and her journey through the year of the story compelling and sad and tragic.

Please support Oxford World Classics new translations of the rare books in Zola's family cycle. Including this one. Buy them all. I am truly grateful to be able to read all 20 of the novels in new translations.
