A broad picture of the Holocaust from the point of view of a child

This book is a memoir of a child who is swept into the whirlwind of the Holocaust. The epic history is narrowed down to the struggle of a single boy nicknamed Leosz to survive the war. From age 7 to age 13, he endures all the horrors that the Holocaust brings upon the Jewish people. Life hangs on split-second timing, decision-making in impossibly cruel circumstances, incredible resourcefulness, luck and the help of others, even Germans.

In the Krakow Ghetto, Leosz is saved from three mass deportations to the death camps. He escapes the ghetto, survives for several weeks pretending to be a

Polish street child, and then goes into hiding. Although sentenced to die after being caught, he is instead miraculously reunited with his family in the Plaszow labor camp. A year later, father and son become slave laborers in the Gozen 2 camp in Austria, where his father perishes. Close to death himself, Leosz is finally liberated by the American army on May 5th, 1945.

I Only Wanted to Live The Struggle of a Boy to Survive the Holocaust eBook Arie Tamir Batya Jerenberg

We've all heard of the Holocaust, it's in our history. It was the genocide conducted by Adolf Hitler's Nazi Third Reich and particularly the SS who was in charge, before and during WWII in the 1930s and 1940s, when 6,000,000 Jewish men, women and children were exterminated. Not many Jewish people lived to tell about these atrocities. Here is the story of one brave boy who did survive. His entire family, parents, sisters, 16 aunts and uncles and 23 cousins, all murdered, and only he survived. It is a well documented, almost day by day accounting of his life during those bleak years when he was about to die at any given moment. We follow his story, written in the first person, as he lives his days, first as a boy from the upper middle class in Krakow, Poland, to the Ghetto, forced labor camps, concentration camps and at death's door, finally liberated by the American troops as WWII ended. I liked this book a lot and glad that I read it and glad the author stayed alive long enough to write it.

I Only Wanted to Live The Struggle of a Boy to Survive the Holocaust eBook Arie Tamir Batya Jerenberg Reviews

This book is a memoir of a child who is swept into the whirlwind of the Holocaust. This book is about a young child who tries to survive the war from the age of 7 to age 13. His life depends on making decisions in impossibly cruel circumstances, the kindness of strangers, his resourcefulness and yes, even luck and help of the Germans. He doesn't spend any time in the death camps but it was still an engaging book.
This is an almost incredible first-hand account of the horrors of the Holocaust. The strength and love shown by this family during the terrible ordeal and their goodness shine through. Yes, the translator from the original needed help with proofreading and errors like that usually annoy me, but I got past that when I realized it was less important than the story being told. The young boy in the story showed resilience that I know I would not have had in those circumstances, as do so many other survivors, and he didn't save himself by harming others. He survived and became a contributor in this world. I highly recommend this book.
The book itself has a lot of spelling and grammatical errors, however, I notice this happens in a lot of kindle books (not just this one.) This book is Arie Tamir true story about his life growing up as a child during the Holocaust. Although, his family had money and for the longest time they lived the life of luxury before the Holocaust started, his father was able for many years to prevent them from living through the horrific events that many other families went through by paying off many people along the way, and I believe that there was a lot of luck involved as well (especially when they were in the camps and separated from their family.) All in all though it is still a heart-filled and very touching story. Although, it seems that his family didn't struggle as much as many of the other families did, they struggled just as much, but in a different way. I learned many things about the Holocaust and what these families went through by reading this book. I applaud Arie for his strength and facing his fears head on while living through such horrible events, all the while trying to keep a positive attitude through it all. Although, there are many different opinions on this book, I feel that it is one well worth reading.
It is amazing to read the details of Arie’s experiences in the camp, the way he was able, though little more than nine or ten years old, to avoid being executed and even to find work for which he was paid in extra food rations and sometimes even in money. He was obviously a smart child who developed a heightened awareness of danger as well as the ability to arouse the interest, even affection, of the people around him, apparently also including the occasional German soldier, and thus to survive Plaszow as well as other concentration camps, such as Gozen and Mauthausen. His accounts of the way the camps were run and how life was lived there is both harrowing and instructive, and the descriptions he gives constitute important evidence for the record.
He lived in a time when a child saw way more and knew way more than he ever should have in any lifetime. WWII has so many atrocities that occurred but to hear it from someone who was a child who lived through it? Heart-breaking on a whole new level. This is a story that I believe everyone should read. This young child lived through and saw so much cruelty, abuse and death it is truly amazing that he survived. Especially the fact that he was shot and then hunted to be killed. I am grateful that he sat down and wrote his story to share what he remembers. He shares not only the horrible truths that were a part of his daily existence but he also shared the good side of humans, the kindness that many showed. Amazing that he and his friends still found ways to play and to be children in a time when they were called upon to endure more than most humans should ever have. It is a story that you will want to read but you won't be able to read it all at once, there's too much to take in. Thank you Arie for sharing your story and your journey. Your inner strength and resilience is truly admirable. I don't know how you survived all of that or heal from it but I loved your raw honesty and your incredible journey.
Despite being a history buff, I had really no understanding of what happened in countries like Poland during WWII. This is an amazing recounting of that time from a child's point-of-view and the horror, despair and slaughter he witnessed. It's hard to understand how this group of people was forced into slavery and ultimately death, but the reality is it could happen to any group or ethnicity at any time. Learning the lessons and hero these stories is crucial to ensuring it never happens again on such a massive scale. Most of humanity is good, but there will always be elements that seek to destroy others simply for the pleasure it gives them.
